Culinary Adventures in Tigerland
Wendy Ip (check out her new website!) wendyip.com and I went to the friends and family preview night over at Tigerland, 85 Ave. A between 5th and 6th Sts. (212-477-9887) in the East Village last night.
We started with the organic homemade ginger sodas which came adorned with nice slices of lime in jar glasses. They were delicious, which seemed like a good sign.
Indeed, it was! We had the shrimp and sausage crepe with lettuce and tomato appetizer with sweet chili and peanut sauces that came on the side. Fresh herbs were a nice complement to the cooked "crepe" -- which was a bit different than a traditional French crepe, but perhaps better! It was off da hook! We were comped the shrimp cake appetizer because they had only three left, and it was supposed to be four to an order. It came with a different sweet vinegar with cucumber sauce, and it, too, was absolutely scrumptious!
The entrees we sampled were the spicy roasted duck in red curry sauce and the braised short ribs. We ordered white rice on the side. (Or if you're feeling like being healthy, brown rice is the other option.)
Both dishes were excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was upscale and cozy. If you're ever in New York City and you have a few extra shekels to spare... because caveat, this is not a place to go if you are on an extreme budget! But would I go back again on maybe another payday? Yes!
